Hi, Greg -

I'm happy to hear these posts are helpful and thanks for the good question. I decided to build my own business instead of getting a post in an established mediation practice because:

1 - I wanted to run my own business, not be someone else's employee. I'd been a VP and didn't see myself moving down the food chain again.

2 - I didn't think there were enough mediation jobs out there to make finding a great post at another mediation company likely. I generally think that's still the case, except perhaps in some major metropolitan areas.

3 - I liked the challenge of building something new from scratch.

I knew it was the right choice the first day I walked into my new office. And I only occasionally had doubts -- and those were usually gone quickly.

Hope that helps!

I am finding this series of posts really helpful. Thanks for writing them. I recently obtained a copy of your book, and will be reading it soon.

One question I do have, is how you decided to go independent, over just taking a job with an already existing mediation practice. What were the factors involved, and when did you "know" it was the right choice?

Paula, thanks for stopping by. I'll be addressing your question in Part 2, because there are things I certainly did learns, things I'd repeat and things I'd rather not!

Best,
Tammy

I am really enjoying reading everyone's "start up" stories. Looking forward to hearing what you might do differently given what you know now. I am always looking for ways to improve my own practice, both in substance and in marketing. Thanks!
