Amanda, I always appreciate what you have to say -- kindred spirit to be sure. I'm drawn particularly to your comment about "being a mediator and not just doing mediation," and have been pondering it as I sip my morning coffee. I think your phrasing finally nails for me my dis-ease with some of the ways the field seems to be developing -- "Big M" Mediation (the formal process) getting attention as another service rather than "little m" mediation as a cluster of approaches for helping folks navigate conflict differently. Would we want to get counseling from someone who says, "I'm primarily a primary care physician but I do a bit of counseling to supplement my medical practice?"

I agree Tammy. This is a big hurdle to developing wider acceptance of and therefore greater use of mediation. The users of mediation really don't like to see mediators not walking their talk! They really don't like to see them competing even though they understand that it is a competitive market.

Without the faith to practice the principles that underpin the process, mediators are cutting their own throats. Walking the talk to my mind means being a mediator and not just doing mediation. Feeling the fear and doing it anyway?
