April mediation business seminar in New England

I’ve just opened registration for my new one-day mediation marketing seminar taking place on Friday, April 9 in Salem, NH (an hour north of Boston). Here’s what I’ve got planned for you:

Uplevel Your Mediation Business: How to Offer Compelling Value to Your Market, Online and Off

Are you a mediator who wonders…

  • What the marketplace really wants from someone with your skills?
  • How to stand out in the crowd authentically and without arrogance?
  • How to get the ball rolling with word-of-mouth marketing?
  • How to leverage social media and the web to attract prospective clients?

This one-day seminar less than an hour’s drive from Boston and easily accessible from the northern New England states, will answer these questions and more. In an engaging, interactive learning environment you’ll learn the four pillars of mediation marketing and how to use them to craft a simple, effectively marketing strategy you’ll want to act on. You’ll learn how to find those most interested in what you offer and how to connect with them, online and off. And you’ll discover straightforward actions you can take now, in a down economy, to attract new clients and position yourself well as the economy improves.

Seminar enrollment is capped at just 15 to give you plenty of focused one-on-one time. We’ll be in a comfortable, professional conference room with plenty of windows and wireless access, so bring your laptop if you have one. Morning snacks and a deli lunch are included in the ticket price. My style is professionally informal — come in casual business attire and be ready to have fun and walk away with a clear 90-day implementation strategy.

Instead of new year’s resolutions, how about action?

I’m hijacking that old bromide about luck being what happens when preparation meets opportunity, and turning it into this:

Success with New Year’s resolutions is what happens when action meets commitment.

If you’ve been thinking about how to position yourself smartly for when the economy brightens, now’s the time to stop the over-thinking habit and start doing. If you’ve been making resolutions for the fresh start of a year, now’s the time to stop resolving (well, except for your clients!) and take the first steps to putting your resolutions into practice.

Those of us who’ve succeeded in the business of mediation and ADR haven’t just thought about doing it. We’ve gotten ourselves out there and been doing.

On January 4, the price for my self-paced, online marketing course for ADR professionals goes up $100. Secure your slot and save a bundle on the enrollment fee before then: Making Mediation Your Day Job course.

Online marketing course for mediators re-opened

This is a quick announcement for those of you who wanted to join my self-paced online marketing course designed especially for mediators but didn’t have the chance before the course filled up last time.

I have time to take another round of participants now and have re-opened the course for new enrollees. If you’ve been thinking about it, don’t contemplate for too long! Once the current slots are filled, I probably won’t be able to open the course again until after the new year.

Find out more and sign up at Making Mediation Your Day Job course.

Odds and ends, november 2009

A few quick announcements:

  • The American Bar Association is sponsoring a mediation video contest to find the best 3-minute demonstration of mediation process and benefits. If you’ve got some creativity, they’ve got $1,000 to part with.
  • Mediate.com reached a major milestone this week, with publication of its 300th free newsletter. Here’s the article celebrating the milestone and offering up some interesting readership stats and resources. We’re all the better for Jim’s and John’s fine work.
  • I anticipate re-opening the Making Mediation Your Day Job course, my self-paced online soup-to-nuts course, for new enrollees around Thanksgiving time. I’ll offer slots first to folks on the notification list.
  • The new edition of Making Mediation Your Day Job will be released in December or January. In addition to wider international distribution, there will also be a Kindle edition. Here’s a sneak peak of the new cover from my publisher’s design department.

How to find past articles that are most relevant to you

news and announcementsThe challenge of having almost 500 free ADR marketing, business management and tech tool articles at Making Mediation Your Day Job is making them all easily accessible and findable for you.

Many of the articles I wrote three or five years ago are still relevant to practice-building today, but if you’re a recent reader, those articles aren’t front and center for you.

So I’ve reorganized the article archives. You can now find articles that are most relevant to your specific interests in three ways:

  • By topic (e.g., practice management, mediation marketing, online marketing, mediation careers)
  • By tool type (e.g., scheduling, invoicing, social media, websites)
  • By month and title

Check out the new article archives page. What do you think (let me know in the comments)?

A skype keynote for the association of missouri mediators

news and announcementsI’ll be keynoting the annual conference of the Association of Missouri Mediators … via Skype.

The Association wanted to keep their one-day conference both high quality and cost competitive in this tough economic year and I think their solution is just so smart and creative.

For more information on the October 31, 2009 conference and the lineup of speakers and panels, visit AMM’s conference page.

Thanks to conference organizers Jane Rippeto and Kathleen Bird for including me.

Premium WordPress Themes I Recommend

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I recommend that websites – blogs or not – be built with WordPress, a free, high-quality software tool commonly used for blogs.

I get a lot of questions about how to customize WordPress so it has the look and feel you want. One way, the expensive one, is to hire a customizer. Another is to purchase a premium WordPress theme; a theme is a design that’s built work with WordPress and allows you to control aspects of the look and presentation of content on your site. The Making Mediation Your Day Job site, for instance, is built with the StudioPress theme.

To make answering these questions easier in the future, I’ve now put up a web page listing the premium WordPress themes I use and recommend. All are well-respected in the website-building community and in my experience come with superb customer support.

I’m an affiliate of the themes listed, meaning I receive a small bonus if you buy via my link. I like to disclose this and hope you’ll consider any bonus a small gesture of thanks for five years of my offering advice and ideas here, gratis!

Can it possibly be mid-August already? Yowza! Happy late summer,
